Comments

Cain's third novel, a story of "the great American institution that never gets mentioned on the Fourth of July, a grass widow with two small children to support" (Hoopes, p.305). Basis for the 1945 film noir directed by Michael Curtiz, starring Joan Crawford, as well as a more recent adaptation - a 2011 HBO mini-series starring Kate Winslett, Guy Pearce, and Evan Rachel Wood. An attractive copy of a key Cain novel, and one that is seldom-seen in this condition. Dark Page Vol.1, p.46; Baird 376.
