JULIP - INSCRIBED TO BARRY HANNAH

New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1994. First Edition. Item #8313

First Printing. Octavo (21.5cm); light blue paper-covered boards and bluish-grey cloth backstrip, with titles and author's facsimile signature stamped in silver on spine and front cover; dustjacket; [xii],[2],3-275,[1]pp. Inscribed by Harrison on the half-title page to National Book Award-nominated author Barry Hannah and his wife, beneath which he has drawn one of his typical one-eyed caricatures: "To Barry & Susan / Comrades in the bloody fields of art / from Ole Jim." Two passages lightly marked in pencil in the margins (presumably by Hannah). Base of spine gently nudged, light wear to lower board edges; Near Fine in a lightly rubbed, Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped (priced $21.95), with a hint of foxing on verso, and a tiny crease to upper front flap fold.

Three novellas by the celebrated author of Dalva and Legends of the Fall. An excellent association copy: Harrison wrote a strong, favorable review of Hannah's debut novel, Geronimo Rex (1972), in the New York Times, proclaiming Hannah an writer "brilliantly drunk with words [who] could at gunpoint write a life story of a telephone pole." They were friends ever since. After Hannah's death, Harrison lamented his loss: "I greatly revere [his work], having read it all. I always thought he would become a massively famous novelist, which didn't quite happen, except in the minds of other writers" (Vanity Fair, "Writers Remember Barry Hannah," March 3, 2010). Orr & Torrey A28.b. 8313.
