ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF D. A. LEVY READING POETRY AT THE GATE COFFEEHOUSE

[Cleveland: S.i., undated but ca.1966-67]. Item #8157

Original single-weight black & white photograph, measuring 17.25cm x 12.5cm (6.75" x 4 7/8"). Right edge cut very slightly askew; light wear, a tiny tear, and a single pin-hole at upper margin; pencil notation on verso; Very Good+.

A candid photo of d.a. levy, wearing sunglasses while reading his poetry in front of a crowd at The Gate, a coffee shop in the basement of Trinity Cathedral in downtown Cleveland. Trinity opened The Gate in 1965, and it quickly became a popular spot for local music and the first live poetry readings in the city, which were organized by levy. At a November, 1965 reading there, levy recited a rather vulgar poem by a 19-year-old audience member, and handed it back to him when he was finished; for that act, a secret indictment was handed down by a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury for publishing and distributing obscene literature, and a warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest.

Price: $650.00
