THE OTHER HOUSE - PRESENTATION COPY
London: William Heinemann, 1896. First Edition. Item #7942
First Impression, one of 600 copies. Two octavo volumes (19cm); turquoise cloth titled in gilt on spines and front covers, with circular ornament blindstamped onto upper covers; [iv],[3],4-206,[207-208] + [32]pp ads; [iv],[1]-202,[203-204] + 32pp ads, dated August, 1896. Someone (most likely the publisher) has embossed the words "Presentation Copy" with a stamp at the upper margin of each title page – a feature not mentioned by either BAL or Edel & Laurence. Gentle sunning to spines, base of spines gently nudged, with some light external wear and mild hand-soil to covers. There are old, faint splash marks to upper text edges on both volumes and lower edge of textblock on Vol.II, not extending into the text at all except for along the upper edge of rear endpaper on Vol.I, and causing some slight rippling of the cloth along the right edge of the rear cover on Vol.I; hinges sound, with text free of foxing; Very Good.
Originally published as a serial in the London Illustrated News, The Other House is an oddity among James novels – the plot being centered around the murder of a child and the concealment of the crime. Edel & Laurence A47a; BAL 10620; Hubin, p.216.
Price: $1,250.00
