The story is centered around an American writer who has more or less turned his back to the world, and the fifteen year-old son of a Muslim holy man. An uncommon title in the proof state – the first we've seen or handled – signed for the original owner during a visit to Bowles in Tangier in the 1990s. Miller A7b. Item #7428
First Impression. Octavo (19.75cm); original beige unprinted card wrappers, with the title written in blue pen on spine; dustjacket; [8],9-384pp. Signed by the author on the title page. Wrappers evenly toned, showing some hand and dust-soil, faint stains, creases, and some old pencil writing neatly erased from front cover; text edges a bit grubby, though internally clean; Very Good and sound. In the finished dustjacket for the trade edition, measuring 1cm taller than the book, clearly folded to size and wrapped around this proof by the publisher; unclipped (priced 16/- net), showing modest shelfwear, dust-soil, a few tiny nicks, small tears, and attendant creases; Very Good+.
