First Impression, one of 850 numbered copies printed for le Amis de l'Edition Originale, this being copy no.343. Octavo (19cm); original printed wrappers; 364, [4]pp. Hint of sunning to spine, with faint, scattered foxing to preliminary pages; signatures uncut; about Fine.

Svevo self-published La Coscienza di Zeno in Italy in 1923, where it went largely unnoticed. The novel would likely have vanished into obscurity if it were not for the efforts of Svevo's friend James Joyce, who championed the work and, using his Parisian contacts, helped to have the novel translated into French and published by Gallimard in 1927. The French First precedes both English translations of the novel by three years. A superior copy of one of the great Italian novels of the last century, and reportedly Joyce's favorite book.
