First Printing. Octavo (20cm); green wrappers with French flaps; 185,[7]pp; text is in entirely in French. Inscribed by Calvino in green ink on the half-title page, dated in the month of publication: "à Marie-Claude de Brunhoff / le livre qui était á vous / Italo Calvino / 29.1.79." Sunning to spine, else Near Fine and clean throughout.

Collection of 20 short stories, originally written in the early 1950's. Preceded by the Italian First published by Einaudi, the French edition precedes both the US and UK editions by four years. A superb inscription to Marie-Claude de Brunhoff, literary critic for L'Express, Le Monde, and the Quinzaine Littéraire; she was married to Laurent de Brunhoff, who had taken over the writing of the famous Babar series of children's books from his father, Jean. Uncommon, particularly inscribed.
