First Issue, with the publisher's 16 page catalogue dated 1897 bound in at the rear. About Near Fine, expertly re-bound in half grey morocco with five raised bands and gilt tooling, retaining the publisher's original grey cloth boards. Spine panel sunned, with a very faint trace of scribbling and remnant of a circular stain to the lower front board. Contemporary owners name at the top of the half-title, and a few scattered spots of soiling throughout the text, else clean and unfoxed. Wells' masterpiece, and a highspot of science fiction literature. Orson Welles' 1940 radio adaptation of the novel was so realistic that many listeners panicked in the belief that a genuine Martian invasion was taking place. Basis for two notable film adaptations, a 1953 film directed by Byron Haskin and the 2005 version directed by Steven Spielberg. Wells Society 14.
