First Issue, with 1942 on the copyright page and without the head and toe bands. A Very Good+ copy, lacking the original mailing box. Binding is tight, text edges lightly toned, with a few short edge tears to the right edge of the preliminary pages. Moderate rubbing to the extremities and to the rear panel, without any evidence of board exposure. A fragile wartime production, notable for the inclusion of 'The Hang Of It,' J.D. Salinger's first appearance in book format. The volume also contains contributions by O. Henry, Elbert Hubbard, Rudyard Kipling, Damon Runyon, and Vincent Starrett. Despite the rubbing, a respectable copy of a book that almost always turns up battered.
