Comments

The second of Bezzerides' three novels, and unquestionably the scarcest. Unlike Long Haul and Thieve's Market, his second novel was never reprinted by any of the paperback publishing houses, and was the only one of the author's books never adapted for the big screen. Set in California's San Joaquin Valley, the novel follows a family of migrant workers and accurately portrays the suffering of farmers and migrant workers at the hands of the predatory agri-business. It has drawn strong comparisons to Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, and draws heavily on experiences from the author's life. A stunning copy of a neglected but terrific piece of California fiction. HANNA 343.
