Hammett's fifth and final novel, a commercial success upon publication, selling more than 30,000 copies within a few months of its release on 8 January, 1934. Basis for W.S. Van Dkye's film of the same name released later the same year, and spawning a successful series of subsequent films through 1947. The cloth Knopf used for The Thin Man contained dye which reacted by fading and mottling, almost without regard to environment or attempts at preservation - an issue that did not affect Hammett's other four novels published by Knopf. We've seen dozens of copies of The Thin Man over the last ten years, and note that the mottling seems to affect even the very best of those copies. An anomalous copy, Fine in ways virtually all copies of this book are not. Layman A6.1.a.
