First Printing. Octavo; black vertical-ribbed cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in silver on spine and front panel; rose-colored topstain; 314pp, [2]. Hint of rubbing to crown, faint offsetting to pastedowns at gutters, with an even though trivially-lightened topstain; Near Fine. Dustjacket is the purple and green variant (one of three, with no established priority); unclipped, lightly spine-sunned, with light edgewear, a few short tears, and an old, faint dampstain at lower rear panel. extending onto the rear joint; still a bright, Very Good+ example of the lovely art deco jacket designed by W.A. Dwiggins. Cain's second novel, basis for the 1956 film directed by Anthony Mann, starring Mario Lanza, Joan Fontaine, Sara Montiel and Vincent Price.
