Comments

Cain's fourth novel, a lurid tale "about the seamier side of city politics and involving a politician double-crossed by his chauffeur who is double-crossed by his ex-mistress" (Hoopes, p.315). The novel was unfavorably reviewed and not a commercial success, selling only 7,500 copies by the end of 1942. Basis for Allan Dwan's 1956 film noir Scarlet Street, starring John Payne, Rhonda Fleming, Arlene Dahl, and Kent Taylor. The Dark Page, Vol.II, p.30-31.
