Description

Deluxe Issue, one of five copies marked "Presentation Copy", each specially bound with an original oil painting and signed by the author (this being copy no.3). Octavo (23.75cm); decorative paper-covered boards and patterned corduroy backstrip, with title label applied to spine; publisher's original acetate dustjacket; 307,[5]pp. Fine in a lightly rubbed, Near Fine dustjacket. Offered together with a corrected typescript of Bukowski's poem "Dog", which appears on p.123 of this collection. 25 lines typed on white bond, with the author's holograph (not typed) title at upper margin; despite making small corrections throughout, remarkably, Bukowski has stricken through the first 19 lines, with the remaining six lines providing slight variations compared to the published text of the poem. Signed and dated (10-12-76) by the author at lower margin, next to a drawing of a large dog. Mild staining and signs of handling, a few tiny splash marks, but would you have it any other way?

Comments

The smallest available limitation of this substantial collection of the Bukowski's poetry from the mid-1970's, basis for Dominique Deruddere's 1987 film Crazy Love. Together with a significant draft of this short but beloved poem, showing both the poet's great love for animals, as well as significant, substantial changes to the text. Krumhansl 60d.
