Thick octavo (20.75cm); beige cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in dark green on spine and front cover; green topstain; [6],7-675,[1]pp. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his German language translator on the copyright page: "For Klaus Lambrecht / with hearty regards and thanks / John Steinbeck / New York 1956." Spine ends and corners worn, sunning to spine and extremities, with two marginal tape-mended tears on pp.7-10; seven gatherings in the middle are from a different issue, with the top edge stained dark blue; hinges sound; Very Good, lacking the pictorial dustjacket.
