Octavo (19.25cm); jade green cloth, with titling, decorations and ruled border stamped in red and navy blue on spine and front cover; deep burgundy topstain; dustjacket; [viii],258,[4]pp. Sunning to spine, usual fading to green dye on cloth, with scattered foxing to text edges, preliminary, and terminal leaves; Very Good+. In the red variant dustjacket, with "Recommended by The Book-of-the-Month Club" sticker on front panel; unclipped (priced $2.00), lightly edgeworn, with a few tiny nicks and short tears, and a few faint scratches to rear panel; an unrestored, Very Good+ example, without the usual fading to spine panel.


Hammett's fifth and final novel, a commercial success upon publication, selling more than 30,000 copies within a few months of its release on 8 January, 1934. Basis for W.S.
