Octavo (17.5cm); original pastepaper boards; [2],x,184,[2]pp. Large and early patriotic bookseller's ticket of Salomon Henkel (Neumarket, Shenandoah County, ca.1805) at upper front pastedown. Extremities a bit worn, shallow loss to paper at spine ends, with a partial crack to front joint, and faint dampstain to upper margin of text; still a complete, well-preserved copy.

Comments

Uncommon volume by Hunnius (1765-1807, an Armenian physician living in Weimar), and among the earliest titles sold by Salomon Henkel. Although the famous Henkel Press did not arrive in New Market, Virginia until 1805, there is reason to believe that some printing was being accomplished in the Shenandoah Valley on another press, and the Henkel's also brought German language books to sell. The use of the British fractional pricing system, and the relatively low manuscript inventory number, suggests an extremely early ticket. 10 copies located in OCLC - of these, only 1 in a U.S. institution (National Library of Medicine).
