Description

First Printings (1,500, 1,000, and 5,000 copies respectively, bound from British sheets). Three octavo volumes (22.75cm); turquoise cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spines and front covers; yellow topstains; dustjackets; [7],8-423; [8],9-352; [10],416pp + illustrated fold-out maps tipped onto rear pastedown of each volume. Fellowship: Hint of sunning to spine, upper board corners gently tapped (though still sharp), with date of "1.1.55" written in a tiny hand at lower edge of rear pastedown; Very Good+. In the correct first printing dustjacket, unpriced, with the ascender clipped on the 'd' in 'Frodo' on the tenth line on the rear flap, the following 'o' not nicked, and the lower edge of Tolkien's photograph on the rear panel cut straight across (not 'V' shaped); gentle sunning to spine, rear panel slightly dusty, with a few small nicks and short tears; an unrestored, Very Good+ or better example. Two Towers: Hint of sunning to spine, mild wear to heel, with some faint, scattered foxing to pastedowns (though fresh internally); Near Fine. In the correct first printing dustjacket, priced $5.00, with the "stripe" at upper and lower edges of front panel, and the notch in the 'r' of 'Towers;' light wear to extremities and front flap fold, with a few tiny nicks and short tears, and scattered foxing evident on verso; Very Good+. Return: Single, shallow bump to upper edge of rear board, else fresh and Fine. In the first printing dustjacket, unclipped (priced $5.00, with oversized 5 present), with two tiny nicks to upper edge and a handful of small edge tears; Near Fine.

Comments

A uniformly attractive, unrestored set of Tolkien's beloved fantasy novel, basis for Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning trilogy of films. The first American printings of each title were produced in notably smaller numbers than their UK counterparts (3,000, 3,250, and 7,000 copies respectively), and attractive sets in the correct dustjackets are quite desirable.
