First Printing of Constance Garnett's translation of Gogol's most famous work, published here in two volumes as part of Gogol's collected works. Both volumes Near Fine, with neat contemporary owners signature and previous ownership stamps on the front pastedowns and free endpapers in each volume. Spine gilt has oxidized, otherwise, both volumes present well, with clean boards and even, brown topstains. First published in 1842, the novel is widely considered Gogol's major work and a masterpiece of 19th century Russian literature. Until the Pevear and Volokhnsky translation was completed, Garnett's translation was the most widely-read in English, and is still in print today.
