First Crowell Edition, preceded by the 1856 edition published by Phillips, Sampson, and Company. Octavo (17cm); maroon vertical-ribbed cloth, with titling and floral decorations stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; top edge gilt; illustrated frontispiece; xii, 223pp. Spine gilt a trifle dulled, but still bright and unrubbed; minute wear to base of spine and lower corners, with previous owner's name and neat rubber-stamp to front endpaper; very Near Fine, and a handsome example of this binding by Lee Thayer (of Decorative Designers).


The French author's famous first novella about a young Corsican girl who pushes her brother to commit murder in order to avenge their father's death. Basis for the 1950 film noir Vendetta, variously directed by Mel Ferrer, Stuart Heisler, Preston Sturges, and Max Ophüls, and starring Faith Domergue and George Dolenz.
