First Printing. Octavo; red and black cloth covered boards, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; dustjacket; 317pp, [3]. Humorously inscribed by the dedicatees below the printed dedication: "For Stan and Sophia Mullen" [beneath which] "- probably because we're the most revolting people he knows - Stanley Mullen / Sophia Mullen." Faint, scattered foxing to text edges, else Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $3.50), with a hint of toning and wear to panels and a shallow dampstain at crown; Very Good+.

Third book in the author's "Future History" series, "the story of the Second American Revolution, the one that takes place more than 100 years from now, when a grim and total tyranny of psychotechnicians and warrior-priests has gained political power and dissolved the Constitution of the United States." Stanley and Sophia Mullen were neighbor's of Heinlein's in Colorado Springs; Stanley, a fellow science fiction author and owner of Gorgon Press, was particularly encouraging to Heinlein during the writing of this novel (see William H. Patterson, Jr's. ROBERT A. HEINLEIN: IN DIALOGUE WITH HIS CENTURY, Vol.2, p.96). While we hesitate to call this copy unique, it is certainly the only inscribed copy of this nature we have seen or handled. Owings, p.15.
