First Printing. Octavo; gray cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in burgundy on spine and front cover; burgundy topstain; dustjacket; 310pp, [8]. Some pinpoint wear to spine and rear cover extremities, else fresh and Fine with a bright, even topstain. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.75), with minute wear to spine ends and front flap corners, two tiny tears, and light dustiness to rear panel; very Near Fine, with the spine colors completely unfaded.


An exemplary copy of the author's eighth book written under the William Irish pseudonym, a story of deceit and suspense set in New Orleans during the 1880's. Basis for François Truffaut's 1969 film noir 'Mississippi Mermaid' ('La Sirene du Mississippi'), starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Catherine Deneuve, as well as the more recent adaptation 'Original Sin,' starring Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie.
