Comments
The third Traven novel to be presented to the English public, and the first book in his six-volume Mahogany, or jungle, series, presenting the birth and development of the Mexican revolution of 1910. Set in southern Mexico, the series follows a group of Indians through a cycle of repression, revolt, and reemergence. First published in 1930 in Berlin by Büchergilde Gutenberg, this edition represents the novel's first translation into English; the American edition, published by Hill & Wang in 1970, is a slightly revised version of the British edition. Easily the scarcest of the author's English language editions, especially so in dustjacket. Treverton 589, p.65-67.
