First Printing. A Very Good+ copy of the elusive First paperback edition of this title. The color on the illustrated wrappers is bright and unfaded. Extremities lightly rubbed, as well as along the the spine edge running parallel to the staples. On the rear panel there are two short, closed tears near the upper and lower right corners, with the attendant area rubbed, showing white instead of brown. Pages are creamy and unsoiled, and despite the flaws, the volume appears to be unread. Handi-Books was a smaller paperback publishing house that never quite achieved the prestige of Gold Medal, Dell, or Lion, and the number of books they produced per title was likely smaller than those of the larger publishing companies. This could account for the scarcity of this particular title, one of the most difficult Woolrich paperbacks to any sort of shape. Basis for the 1943 film noir directed by Jacques Tourneur.
