First Printing. Octavo; orange paper-covered boards, with titles stamped in blue-gray at spine and panels; blue edge-staining; 234pp. Spine lightly sunned, edge-staining faded, paper skinned at two corner tips, with two small spots to rear panel and rear pastedown, with small vintage booksellers ticket to same; two previous owners names to front pastedown - one in ink, and the other the rubber stamp of Walter E.B. Teschan, a translator of Ibsen into English; binding sound - Very Good to Very Good+.

A historic volume - the very first book issued by publisher Alfred A. Knopf - beginning a long tradition of publishing continental literature in translation. The volume collects four of Augier's best-known dramatic works: 'Olympe's Marriage,' 'Monsieur Poirier's Son-In-Law,' 'The House of Fourchambault,' and 'The Post-Script.' Though the book lacks the (presumed) dustjacket, it is still among the nicer copies of this title we have encountered. An important debut for a publisher approaching its centennial.
