Octavo; first issue binding in blue cloth, with publisher's imprinted measuring 3mm at base of spine and no ads bound at the rear; titles stamped in blind on front panel and in gilt on spine; 155pp, [1]. Corners gently tapped (though still sharp), vintage bookseller's label to front pastedown, with an ancient, typed bookseller's description (2.5 lines) gently pasted onto base of rear endpaper; Near Fine. In a later state dustjacket, with sub-title printed on front panel, with listing of "Books by A. Clutton-Brock" to rear panel, showing "What is the Kingdom of Heaven?" as being in the sixth edition; gentle sunning to spine, thin sliver of a chip at crown, and a trifle edge-worn; Very Good+.

Eliot's fifth book and first collection of essays, culled from the pages of The Egoist, The Athenaeum, The Arts and Letters, and The Times Literary Supplement. Scarce in anything approaching a presentable jacket. Gallup A5.a.
