Description

16mo; the 'No Name' format, issued in publisher's black 'V' cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in red and gilt on spine and panels; printed endpapers; 301pp, [2]. Cloth rubbed at corner tips, exposing the boards, with shallow loss at crown and base of spine; rubbing to cloth along rear joint, with discreet exposure of threading; binding sound and firm, clean throughout, with the decorative elements nicely preserved - a solid Very Good copy. An important volume in the "No Name" series, which featured American poetry and prose written by prominent authors whose identities were kept secret. The present volume, published in a tiny edition of 2,000 copies, features contributions by two authors whose works are strongly associated with the feminist movement: "Husband and Wife," by Christina Rossetti (pp.42-44), and most notably, "Success" by Emily Dickinson. While Dickinson was a prolific private poet, "Success" is credited with being the only poem published during her lifetime. Despite the flaws, an attractive copy of an important debut. BAL 118.
