McGovern ran against, and lost to, Richard Nixon (an arch-nemesis of Thompson's), and Thompson was one of the few journalists who stuck with McGovern throughout his campaign, resulting in a lifelong friendship. While Thompson is almost universally revered for his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Campaign Trail '72 remains one of the best pieces of political writing written during the 20th century.
