First appearance of Chandler's novelette "Pick-Up On Noon Street," which was retitled as "Noon Street Nemesis" by the Munsey Company shortly after purchasing it. Set in Los Angeles, it features undercover narc Pete Anglish, who accidentally becomes involved in a scheme to extort money from a movie star. Bruccoli C48. Item #7059

Quarto (25cm); original pictorial pulp wrappers; 144pp; illus. Modest wear, small tears and attendant creases to wrapper extremities, with a shallow tide-mark to lower left corner of rear wrapper, and a loss to lower right corner of contents leaf, costing a few words; Very Good.

Offered together with a check made out to Raymond Chandler from the Frank A. Munsey Company, for $225.00, dated March 20, 1936 (measuring ca.8.5" x 3.25"). Signed by Chandler in orange ink on verso, above which appears the following typed endorsement statement: "By endorsement of this check the payee acknowledges payment in full for the following: One story entitled "Pick-Up On Noon Street," which the payee sells to the drawer with all North American magazine rights thereto, with warranty of authorship and ownership, and with authority to copyright said rights. Any alteration of the above clause makes this check void." Cancellation perforations and ink "Received Payment" stamps on verso, otherwise quite well preserved.
