Traven's second book translated into English, and the first appearance of Traven's own translation, which ran nearly 80 pages longer than the UK edition by Chatto & Windus. Set it Mexico, it is a story of gold, greed, and the best and worst in human nature. A distinguished copy of the author''s best-known work, retained by the studio which produced John Huston's Oscar-winning 1948 film noir which catapulted it to international fame. Second Printing of the American Edition, following the first by two months. Octavo (19.5cm); black cloth, with title stamped in gilt on spine and in blind on front cover; brown topstain; dustjacket; [10],366,[4]pp. The Warner Bros. file copy, rubber-stamped "IMPORTANT! Return To Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc. Story Dept." on front endpaper. Light wear and three tiny tears to cloth at spine ends, faint paper-clip impression to upper margin of a center gathering, else a clean, Near Fine copy. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.50), worn and gently spine-sunned, with losses to spine ends, corners, and lower edge of front panel, encroaching on the first four letters of the author's name; a few tears and attendant creases, with some faint foxing on verso; just Very Good.
