London: Hamish Hamilton, 1954. First British Edition. Item #486
First Impression. A Fine copy in a Very Good+ jacket designed by Roy Sanford. White lettering on the spine panel lightly toned, with a few tiny, shallow chips at the crown of the spine and upper corner tips. Rear panel slightly dusty and front flap is corner clipped, although the 10s. 6d. net price is still present. Though not marked in any way, this copy belonged to author and director Samuel Fuller (1912-1997) and came from his personal library. Basis for the 1955 film noir directed by Charles Laughton, starring Shelly Winters, Lillian Gish, and a seriously creepy Robert Mitchum in the role of the wicked preacher. An attractive example of the British edition, with a jacket that's considerably more appealing than the American. Provenance included.
