Pseudonymous novel by Earl Schenck Miers (1910-1972), author of over 100 books who was best-known for his narrative reconstructions of Civil War episodes. This was the only mystery novel he published under either name. Set in Stelton, NJ, the novel centers around four men who live within close proximity, all of whom receive Christmas cards with "Happy New Year" struck-out, and an added hand-written message reading "You will die before the old year ends;" when one of the men is stabbed to death on Christmas Eve, murder, attempted murder, and an investigation follow.
