Two octavo volumes (24.25cm); full crushed brown morocco, spines in six compartments, with titles stamped in gilt on spines, and elaborate geometric border tooled in gilt in compartments and covers; doublures of indigo crushed levant, with triple-ruled borders and gilt dentelles; vertically-ribbed blue silk endpapers; all edges gilt; ,xii,494,; [ii],537,pp; with frontispiece portraits of the Marquis and Madame de La Fayette and 10 maps. The author's copy, with presentation by the publisher in a calligraphic hand on a tipped-in leaf preceding the frontispiece: "Bound especially for Mr. Charlemagne Tower, Jr., by J.B. Lippincott Company." Some trivial wear to lower corner-tips and a few raised bands, a few faint scuffs to upper compartment of Vol.1, with light wear to rear cover of Vol.2; scattered foxing to frontispiece portraits and accompanying tissue guards, else clean throughout; a Near Fine set.
