EXCERPTS FROM VISIONS OF CODY - LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED

New York: New Directions, 1960. First Edition. Culled from the pages of his 512-page manuscript, the excerpts from Kerouac's novel Visions of Cody were shaped by his publisher at New Directions into a tight, cohesive package - something Kerouac's original manuscript lacked. At the center of the novel was Neal Cassady, a dominant influence in Kerouac's life who, as Dean Moriarty in On the Road, achieved literary immortality. It would be another 13 years before the novel was published in full, some four years after Kerouac's death. Charters A9. Item #4067

One of 750 numbered copies signed by the author, this copy marked "Out-Of-Series" on the colophon. A Fine copy of the publisher's prospectus is laid in, along with a photocopy of a TLS (dated March 15, 1960) from the promotion department of New Directions to Robert Perkin of the Denver Rocky Mountain News, stating that they were not sending out review copies of Visions of Cody, as they'd sold most of the run prior to the release date; "However, as there was a small overrun and we have some out-of-series copies on hand, we are sending a few to people we think might be particularly interested in the book. The locale for this story is Denver - and therefore, this special copy for yoru personal library."
