Item #3901 SHADE. Frank Stanford, Ginny Crouch Stanford, poems, illustrations.

SHADE

Seattle: Mill Mountain Press, 1975. First Edition. The Arkansas poet's scarce fourth book, one of seven titles he would release through the Mill Mountain Press prior to his suicide in 1978 at the age of 29. A collection of 30 poems, with four illustrations by artist Ginny Crouch Stanford throughout the text. Copyright page states "Limited Edition, Second Edition," though this is in fact the First - almost certainly a bit of bibliographic mischief perpetrated by the author. Uncommon; OCLC notes 11 copies in member institutions. Item #3901

Slim octavo (24.5cm); powder gray wrappers, with titles stamped in dark brown on spine and front cover; [9],44,[1]pp; illus. Gentle sunning to spine, slight bend to upper corners, with faint soil spot to upper right corner of front wrapper, and a small stain to rear wrapper; Very Good+. Though not designated in any way, this copy comes from the estate of poet Carolyn (C.D.) Wright, Stanford's lover and head of Lost Roads Publishers after his death, bearing her small markings in the margins of four pages.
