Woodstock, IL: The Dramatic Publishing Company, 1977. First Edition. The National Book Award-winning author's first book, a one-act play co-written with classmate Kathy Siebert for a non-traditional high school physics class when Franzen was just 17 years old. "The anachronistic plot centers on an attempt by Russian spies to kidnap Sir Isaac Newton and steal the secret weapon known as gravity that he has discovered" (Comstock, Roland. "The Corrections to The Corrections." Fine Books & Collections, September/October, 2005, p.29). The earliest copies were produced on a hectograph, but the playwrights signed a contract on March 17, 1977 to license performance rights with the Dramatic Publishing Company for a one-time payment of $100. The printed play was published both in black and white and black and yellow wrappers. Franzen estimates not more than 100 copies were printed.
