THE GALAX - IN 'FRESHMAN WRITING: ESSAYS BY STUDENTS IN ENGLISH 1 AND 2 AT DUKE UNIVERSITY, 1958-1959'

[Durham, NC: Duke University, 1959]. First Edition. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author's first appearance in print, a 3pp story titled 'The Galax' containing autobiographical elements. The inclusion in 'Freshman Writing' precedes her first published book by five years, and as a student publication, one can presume these were produced in very small numbers. Rare - we know of one other copy offered in the trade in recent memory. OCLC shows 2 institutional holdings (Indiana University and Johns Hopkins), and we note one other at U. Rochester. An important debut, and a stopper for Tyler collectors. Item #1508

Slim octavo; white stapled wrappers, with titles printed in black on front cover; 29pp, [1]. Bookplate signed by Tyler loosely laid in. Light wear along spine fold and extremities, with a faint vertical crease along front and rear wrappers; Very Good+ to Near Fine.

Price: $1,750.00
