THE SEVEN STOREY MOUNTAIN - INSCRIBED TO KURT ENOCH

New York: Signet / The New American Library, 1952. First Paperback Edition. Key association copy of Merton's best-known book, a spiritual memoir first published in 1948, reflecting on his early life and search for faith in God. Despite a modest first printing of 6,000 copies, the hardcover edition was a surprise best-seller, eventually selling more than 600,000 copies. Kurt Enoch's decision to publish a cheap, accessible paperback edition propelled Merton's reputation further into the mainstream; by 1984, paperback sales had exceeded 3 million copies. One of the 20th century's towering works of spirituality, and one which has never been out of print. Dell'Isola A7c. Item #3830
